Title: Sami Malik in conversation with Dr Leeds
In this conversation Sami Malik discusses the fifth series of ‘Health chats’ and began by asking what was known from feedback from viewers and whether they had any specific requests for particular topics.
Dr Leeds replied that he was grateful to be asked to arrange a fifth series of talks but was particularly pleased that over two million viewers regularly watched the programmes. He said analysis of viewer behaviour showed that if the viewer stayed with the programme for 5 minutes they were likely to continue until 15 or 20 minutes and a good proportion would stay until the end. He added that this meant that key points of information needed to be introduced early in the conversation for those short of time, followed by a detailed discussion then concluding with another summary. Viewers had expressed pleasure in hearing bariatric surgeon Pratik Sufi and had asked to hear him again. Dr Leeds was pleased that Mr. Sufi had accepted the invitation and would speak in the fourth or fifth programme. Viewers also wanted to hear more about dementia, infertility and kidney disease linked to diabetes and this would be addressed.
Sami Malik then asked about the geographic location of viewers and Leeds responded that about 50% were located in South Asia, 20% in East Asia and the remaining 30% across the rest of the globe. When asked if there was any topic that was new and exciting Leeds said that he was pleased to tell viewers that yes indeed he would discuss a very recent paper that was just published by a team from Glasgow who investigated the benefit of weight loss in long Covid – the condition where the symptoms of the Covid infection, such as physical and mental fatigue, anxiety and depression could persist for many weeks and months, and some times be so severe as to prevent return to work They had used the same weight loss programme as was used in the diabetes remission studies that Prof Mike Lean described in series four. In Leeds’ view this was the most exciting and significant paper that he had read in the last year or so and he was pleased that Prof Lean would discuss the study and it’s results in the second programme.
