The soldiers drew their swords, but before the swords could show their work, Halaku Khan gave a signal, gave a loud laugh, and addressing this group of Sufis said, “O oppressed nobles of a defeated cowardly nation!” After the destruction of Baghdad, even if Halaku Khan was accounted for, what happened now, even if your curses are accepted, even if Halaku Khan is reborn and killed a hundred times, even then Baghdad will not be settled, head down from the neck and glory again. But they will not be built, the dusty buildings and ashes of libraries will not be rebuilt, no revenge of the world can now grow grass on the banks of the river Dajla. “Halaku Khan got up, approached the group of Sufis and fixed his eyes on them and said, “The punishment you are talking about is me and I am punishing you to stay alive in this graveyard.”
Halaku Khan went back from Baghdad. Will the innocents of Baghdad, Afghanistan, and Gaza return?
A friend of mine is suffering from the same type of religious complacency. He came to me yesterday and as soon as he came, he started saying, “The corpses of oppressed Gazans, Iraqis, helpless Afghans, Kashmiris and innocent Pakistanis are saying that Israel, India, America and the worst end of all his companions is near, you should write it down, they will soon be destroyed.” I laughed, flicked his collar and said affectionately “Brother! The bitterness of anger and revenge will not go away in this way. America and its allies may be destroyed ten thousand times, but they should not be destroyed if they fall on us. My friend was disgusted by my words and sat down in anger. I know a sane person might react the same way.
Maybe my friend’s optimism is correct, if the sun really rises tomorrow there will be nothing on the map of the world but a few smelly streams and charred rocks across the Atlantic Ocean and the Indian Ocean, but that’s just a “maybe” right now.
